One of the most alarming statistics about farming is that for every six farmers over the age of 65, there’s only one under the age of 35. Mechanized efficiencies and low wages are often noted reasons for the decline.
The National Young Farmers Coalition’s blog is a great resource for people who are interested in farmers and farming. A lot of what’s written is aimed at the concerns of members, but if you’re a real food geek, you’ll find a lot to like here.
Michael Pollan did a great thing when he suggested we all ask our farmers questions, but that conversation is even better served when we are more educated. Pick a few articles, read the comments, and ask your farmers what they think. You’ll get a lot out of it.
